Banned Books/Banned Bodies – Democracy Project

List Art Center BROWN UNIVERSITY - RM 120, Providence, Rhode Island, United States

Event Type: In-Person Location: Providence, RI Event Contact: Democracy Project at Brown University - [email protected] How should we respond to recent attempts to censor educators, ban books, and ban or control (some) bodies in the United States? How are efforts to ban what is taught in public schools connected to laws banning abortion access and transgender care? Policing gender and censoring reading are vital threats to democracy and equal education at all levels. As part of the Freedom to Learn National Day of Action on May 3rd, the Democracy Project invites you to join us for the Banned Books/Banned Bodies panel to jump-start a conversation about how we should respond to these threats as a Brown community. The panelists—Dean of the Faculty Leah Van Wey, Prof. Jonathan Collins (Education), Prof. Macarena Gomez-Barris (Modern Culture and Media), Prof. Bonnie Honig (Political Science and MCM), Prof. Noliwe Rooks (Africana Studies), and students Ryan Doherty and a representative from Brown Votes—will offer their perspectives on the impact of book bans and other forms of censorship or governmental control followed by a broader discussion with the audience.
